Workgroup is a place where all the computers are connected without any policy defined.

Domain is again a collection of computers where policy can be defined under each and ever user.

A workgroup is a bunch (several) computers connected via LAN with a common group name. A Domain is similar, except that one computer is the "master" of the domain and is used to authenticate resources across the LAN.

A domain has centrally controlled security. In a workgroup, all machines control security individually.
