Mahabali was a great Asura (not demon - Varuna and Mitra are example of other great Asuras) king in the clan of Prahlad and Hiranyakashipu. Lord vishnu in his Vaman avatar asked him for three feet of land and measured entire Earth in two feet. The benevolent king offered his body for the third feet.
Since he had donated all his land and body, he refused to stay on Earth and left to live in Patal Loke. He is supposed to visit Jambu Dweep ( subcontinental India) every year on the occassion of Onam. He is revered for his generosity and his lineage.

Wikipedia defines mahabali as:
The legend of King Mahabali (IAST: mahÄbalÄ«, sanskrit: महाबलॠ) or MÄvÄli (as known locally) is the most popular legend behind Onam. Onam celebrates the visit of King Mahabali, a king of ancient Dravida to the state of Kerala every year. The festival is celebrated with fervour as King Mahabali is greatly respected by his subjects. Mahabali is also popularly called Maveli and Onathappan. He is believed to have ruled in South India before the Ramayana event and his empire is believed to have extended from the Vindhyas in the north to the far out in the south.

He is not a God but an emperor of Demons(rakshasas). He had all virtues practised righteous path.He agreed to give land of 3 feet measure to Lord Vishnu who came as a dwarf Vamana. Vamana measures entire earth with one foot and sky with the other. As there is no place to measure the 3rd, Vamana keeps his foot to measure thew 3rd on the Head of Mahabali and pushes him to lower worlds. Since he gave up his entire kingdom to Lord Vishnu, he became a noble person.Mahabali was the grandson of Prahlada another Demon King and staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu.
People in Kerala still believe that Mahabali comes to earth every year on their ONAM festival (harvesting) day.

Mahabali was a king who was very truthful and a very good ruler at that. The subjects of his kingdom were treated equally as humanbeings. There were no thefts. cheating and lies during his rule. There was no dearth of food which was aplenty and there were no infantdeaths it seems. But he was a demon or as they are called rakshasa and the god were afraid that he will become very popular and people will start forgetting god. Hence vamana awatar happened and he was sent to Pathaallok.

Mahayana is the type of Buddhism practiced in much of the Far East, but Mahabali doesn't bring any of my books to mind. I believe Maha is sanskrit and translates to English as Great. Now there is Bali the place once called the "Jewel of the East." So your word may translate to Great Bali.

No. God is 1. He may be mahabali but is maha budhiman.
Mahabali etc. may be super man or special man or holy man but always lower than god.

No... he is not a god. He was a king tested by Lord Vishnu. But he was renouned for his sacrifice. You can call him a legend.
Guys.. if you don't know things, then you don't need to respond. Some of the messages here are inflammatory and derogatory.
