My 3 month old is very chesty, he has had it since birth and i have been to the doctor on numerous occasions. The doctor keeps telling me that its just mucus and it will find its way out basically. He also keeps prescribing saline nasal drops as he also feels it could just be a blocked nose, i've used these but to no avail. Over the last couple of days, my son has seemed to become even more chesty ( i personally do not think its just a nose blockage as when i put my ear to my sons chest it sounds like that). He is having trouble sleeping for long periods of time and is now also having trouble finishing his bottle. I'm making another appointment with my doctor today but their not open for another hour so just wondered if anyone else had had this with their child???
Thank you.

Hi, sorry i forgot to mention, this is my 2nd child as i already have a 3 year old daughter. I'd also like to add that when i wrote trouble sleeping, i don't just mean waking up for a feed etc, i mean waking up because he is not breathing very well. Thank you all for your answers. :-)

Hello to you all that replied to my question earlier today.I phoned NHS Direct and told them my little boys symptoms and they said that i should get an emergency appt with m doctor so I phoned my doctor straight after at 8 this morning and told them my situation with my little boy and they told me to phone back at 8-15 as they cannot take appointments until then. I then phoned on the dot but they left it ringing for 5 mins before picking up. I was then told that they had no appointments left available and to try again MONDAY! I said that i felt this was not good enough as i'd already rang once just to be told to call back again in which they replied 'well if your that worried take him to the hospital.' That i've done and they have said that he has an upper chest bronchial infection! So much for my doctor saying a blocked nose the past 3 months! Looks like i'm changing surgeries! Anyways i just wanted to say thank you all so much!!

I think you should take him to a different doctor. You know when something is wrong. You're his mother and you know best. My son is battling an ear infection and a bad cough right now...I took him to his regular doctor with the ear infection...then when his cough got bad I couldn't get an appointment with his regular doctor so I took him to a different clinic. She told me he was fine and told me to go home an wait it out. I then took him back to his regular doctor...who diagnosed him with croup and gave him medicine...Like I said...you know when something is wrong...be persistent. Try a different doctor. In my experience it was the opposite but if your baby has been chesty for 3 months...something isn't right!! And obviously you know you're right...otherwise you wouldn't be concerned.

I think I would be looking for another doctor who takes my concerns seriously. Things to try in the meantime. Get a cool mist humidifier for his bedroom and run it every night. The extra moisture in the air will help loosen the stuff in his lungs and help get it out of there. Think about a small air purifier for his room also. This very well could be allergy related and giving him the cleanest air possible to sleep in might just help. He could be allergic to anything, however, I wouldn't suspect dairy with a cough. I'd suspect dust, pet dander, a scent from a fabric softner, laundry detergent, an air freshener. Change as many products as you can back to unscented or hypoallergenic. Start with the ones that he comes in direct contact with such as laundry detergent, fabric softener, cleaners used and see if he doesn't improve. Improvement will be slow because you are looking for a needle in a haystack almost. If he goes to a sitter or daycare, ask what products they use around the children and look for possible allergens there. Get a vacuum with HEPA filtration. This helps clean the air as you sweep. After you get the new vacuum, sweep every day for about a week. I got a Bissell Healthy Home with sealed HEPA on it and I am quite impressed. My one grown son has allergies to cats and we have cats. He used to sneeze when he came to visit but since I got the new sweeper, he does not sneeze at all. Good luck! And give the little guy a hug!

I'm not a parent at all, never had a baby, but if I were you I'd take the child to another doctor for a second opinion. You're right, and go with your motherly instinct, that is sounds like something more serious is going on and the current doctor does not seem to be taking it very seriously.

Mucus build up means milk alergy to me. I would switch to a soy formula. Not all babies exhibit colic the same. If you really think there is a nasal blockage, you can seek out a pediatric ear, nose and throat doctor to confirm your belief.

I have had an experience where a doctor insisted that something was this or that and it turned out to be something different. Seek a second opinion. Your child could have anything from just mucus to an allergy that needs to be dealt with.

My three year old was like that as an infant and it turned out that she was born with asthma and the doctors missed it for the first 6 months of her life. In fact, they hospitalized her twice thinking she had bronchitis. We only found out because I mentioned to the pediatrician quite by accident that both my older daughter and I had it. Ask to have him tested.

this young, every baby has problems finishing their bottle. their might be some fluid still stuck in him. having trouble sleeping? of course, he's only three month! keep talking to your doctor, worry only if he starts behaving untypical. i know being a new mom is stressful, take it it with an ounce of humor. your baby knows when you are stressed, it will stress, too!
