Free weights are going to give you the best results, b/c they work not only your targetted muscle groups, but your "isolation" muscles as well...simply put, if you use a machine, your muscles will be very well suited for that EXACT motion, while if you use free weights, your muscles will be conditioned for use in the real world :D

Used properly, free weights are better, since they tend to force you to use the supporting muscles, which is beneficial. You can also do far more exercises with free weights.

Machines can be useful. Its easier to maintain proper form on machines, which is helpful, especially for beginners. Certain exercises, the machines are pretty good relative to free weight alternatives - even in a 'free weight' area of a gym, its not uncommon to see a pulley for tricep pulldowns, a rowing machine, etc. Finally, if you're doing a HIT style workout (one set to failure), for some exercises its much safer to go to failure on a machine if you're not working with a spotter. A lot of the weight machines we have now were designed by people involved in HIT.

I started with machines, then moved to free weights. I think that's not a bad strategy for beginners.

Machines limit the work to specific major muscls mostly and Dunbells offer free range of motion that works muscles most folks aren't aware they have. You'd get a better workout over all free ranging it, and see better results faster. Machines on the other hand may be safer to use for some folks. People get careless with free weights and strain themselves more often with them than a fixed mobility machine.

i think dumbbells are better you have more free range to focus on certain areas but a weight machine i feel is safer for a beg. weight lifter because it guides you through the proper movements
