It sounds like the early stages of menopause BUT it also can be caused by a tumor or fibroid in her uterus--- money or not, there are such things as free clinics, especially for women-- make her go to one immediately- she needs a thorough check up with a pap test, ultrasound of the uterus and she may even need a D&C, which is a simple procedure where the scrape the old lining out because it hasn't shedded properly and could cause cancer down the line---just like you scrape the layers of caked food out of a pot you just cooked in- you scrape the first layer, and there's more, and so on and so on until the pot is clean as it was new----and that's the point Im trying to make here- she needs to see a doc--- get her to a free clinic ASAP

Could be a normal part of menopause, could be something else. Check around for a health fair (will usually do bloodwork real cheap) Find a women's clinic. Paying $100 or so is better than spending a month stressing out over something that is probably nothing, so go with her and get her checked out.
Read through the Q & A that I linked to. (scroll down if you don't see anything)

She's most probably starting her menopause. That is the age when we begin to change, sometimes depending on the person, even at 40. So, nothing to worry about. But if she's getting hot flashes...or as I call them, energy surges :>), that is even more of a sign. You can't help but notice, the redness in the face, the interment sweating is all a part of it. Tossing off the blankets at night, crabby one minute, apologetic the next.
It's the hormonal changes that cause all of this. We drop smaller eggs or shed just the lining first, then the period. She'll be fine. It's just something women have to deal with and a sign of maturity...of the older kind.

I have to agree with all the other answers, It could very well be menopause. She has all the symptoms of it and is at the right age. She should get to a doctor, this is a big time in her life as a female.

Try going to this website. It has some very good information. She may be peri-menopausal. This is the time just before menopause and periods become highly irregular. Also, try going to a free clinic. Good Luck!

At her age she could be going or getting ready to hit the menopause part of her cycle. As she gets closer to 50 they
should start getting less frequent, not last that long. But this
20 days of light period I am not sure why.

Perhaps she is starting menopause. She really does need to talk to a doctor. Perhaps she can find a government clinic to help her out or apply for Medicaid.
