Never reformat for a virus issue.
How did the IT guy identify the worm ?
Do an online scan (3a) and check what worms viruses are there on the computer. If you cannot access the internet with your pc. Download (1) and (2) and burn it to a cd or save it on a usb key and run it on the infected pc
(1) Get you self a good antivirus or a free one .
(2) If you have not already scanned your comp with spybot do that now .Update it and then run it so it gets rid of all the spyware and trojans
(3a) Do an online virus scan to check if you still have any other viruses in your computer. And let us know if the online virus scan still finds any virus or spyware .
If the above steps do not remove the hijack then you would need to
(4) Download hijackthis
(5) Post the hijackthis log on the hijackthis forum for the hijackthis experts to take a look
6) Install and use firefox while browsing

He can detect it but Norton can't?
Sounds like he's a goofball! The easy way to fix computer problems is to reformat and reload - that approach never fails the computer "helper", but causes havoc for the owners of the machines.
Bring in someone else for a second opinion.

He is maybe right. Many people can not see these trojans or spyware. Norton does not help here at all.
P.S. If you do not believe that guy, the best solution here is to get 2nd opinion from a local PC repair shop or any place (not a friend or or so called programmer who knows how to turn on the computer)

Oh please...
The other poster's right... Norton can't see it, but he can? Hardly.
At the very minimum he used another anti-virus to see it, and if it can see it, it can either remove it or say what it is - then you can get a removal tool for it.
The guy's looking for a quick fix for a quick buck.
Grab another anti-virus - ClamWin is good - http://www.clamwin.com/
Put it on one of the computers and run it. Update it and run it again.
If that fixes the problem, you've found two things to remove
The virus
and the incompetent IT.
I'm not an IT and I know this...
Oh, and my favourite IT quote:
If your IT department insists on you using Internet Explorer for "security reasons", he doesn't know his a$$ from a hole in the ground.
Firefox is the way to go instead of using Internet Explorer.

i agree with BigRez...Definatly get a second oppinion!!
It is quiet possible for an antivirus program to not have a virus definition for a worm yet, but noton is normally pretty good
If Norton cant find it, get another antivirus (www.free.grisoft.com is a decent free one)

Norton, maybe a little user unfriendly. But I believe that it can detect all known viruses.
If you don't believe your technician, then consult another one.
