I am 45yo and know I don't want to do what I am doing now for the rest of my life. I want to be out of sales by the time I am fifty - no later. How long should I wait to make a change or, should I do it now?

POINT BLANK: How much less 'marketable' is a 50yo in comparison to a 45yo or, will it make no difference?

Depending on what you change to I can't see it making any difference. My grandparents are in their mid seventies (if not older) and they just started a new career this summer, before that they were retired for about 5 years, before that they were both attorneys for at least 10 years and before my grandparents went to law school my grandfather was in the Navy for over 30 years!

Point is it is NEVER to late to start something new. Any time is a good time if you are determined.

i really am not too optimistic about a career change after 50. if you are planning to make a career change, DO IT NOW!!!

after 50, the only way for you to make a career change is going back to school and taking a master's degree or doctorates. most companies do not want to hire after 50 unless you are very qualified. this will give you 5 years start in your career to gather the experience you need. why wait 5 years when it seems you are ready now and thinking about it now. anything can happen in 5 years that may make it unfeasible to change careers.

POINT BLANK! you are certainly more marketable at 45 then at 50. big corporations do not like to hire those over 50 as it leaves them only 15 years or so before they have to lose you to retirement. they rather invest long term in younger people.

those 5 years makes a big difference. unlike if you were 30, the 5 years (35 years old) makes no difference but not at the age you are in. you are competing with the younger generation, those between the ages of 30 to 40. DO IT NOW!!!!!

- You should change whenever you are ready to accquire new skill for new career.
- As for age, I say it is not always relavent. There are work that age matter little, and some line of work age event means more experience for example doctor or lawyer. You don't have to start medical school, but should meet up with a career counsolor at your local community college

You are never too old to make that change in your life. There are so many options out there now, it's not like it used to be. Have you thought of working for yourself? There are so many legit home business out there to choose from and this is probably what will make you happier. Go ahead and check around. Good luck!

I say if you are not happy try something else, you are never to old to have a happy career. I don't think age will matter, the older you are the wiser and the more experience you have. Wish you the best!!

It sounds like you are miserable, do it now. And despite what people might express, the fact of the matter is that younger people are more hireable than older ones. I see "age-ism" happen all the time.
