I just bought a 29 gal tank and wanted to put a single oscar in it after doing research it looks like it will outgrow this. Are these people being over cautious because it seems if the fish only grows to max 12 inches it should be okay in a well filtered 29 gal tank. I would buy a 55 but Have got the water in it already and it's set to go. I dont want to upgrade in the future so can it live in this tank alone healthy it's entire life. otherwise whats another good fit for the tank similar to oscar's maybe some kind of cichlid???

Oscars grow big and they grow fast. You have time, but not that much - if your Oscar is growing well he'll start to look awfully cramped in that tank after a year. If he doesn't then it's time to question what the tank is doing to his growth.

In the right enviornment a male will live for many years and pass that 'maximum' 12" mark. I also question the point of keeping a big fish in the cell of a tiny tank, when that tank can become much bigger by stocking smaller fish.

The other thing with cichlids is that they're much more rewarding when care and effort is put into it and you achieve a mating pair. There are many smaller fish that can be kept in your 29 gallon as a pair with similar cichlid character to the Oscar - Firemouths and Convicts are two popular ones. You can go one further and get a dwarf species, like Kribs or Apistogramma.

Check out www.cichlid-forum.com and spend some time there - you'll find plenty of options and lots of information.

We had an Oscar and a Jack Dempsey interior of an identical 29 gallon tank mutually. They were both about an identical length, so that they not in any respect tried to eat one yet another. They both did wonderful in that tank...not in any respect had a venture with them outgrowing the tank. We upgraded them to a fifty 5 and extra some convicts that were an identical length. Convicts are prolific breeders. even as our Oscar finally surpassed on, he change into about a foot lengthy. huge, beautiful fish. Our Dempsey change into about 9 inches lengthy even as she surpassed. we've now a fifty 5 set up with peach and silver cons, 2 parrot cichlids and a pink jewel cichlid. The parrots are more effective...about the dimensions of the palm of my hand, and the cons and pink jewel are about index finger length. the in uncomplicated words ones who get eaten are the feeder fish and at times the toddlers.

you could do it in a 29 gallon, but it would be a crappy life for you oscar. a good fit with the oscar in a 55 would be a convict, keyhole, basically anything bigger then the oscar's mouth.

Your oscar would be very very happy for a very very long time if he were well taken care of------later on down the road if and when he starts to get a little big you can them think about a bigger tank--------trust me--------you'll have plenty of time.
