You have to keep in mind that most people hear 'Carmine' and think 'The Godfather'; much like people associate 'Damian' (which actually means 'peaceful') with 'Demon'. If your husband is that strongly against it, make it the middle name and find a name that you can both agree on for the first name. Simply tell your husband that you want to honor your grandfather in some way and you feel that's a good way to do it.

Carmine was a popular female name from the WWII generation and earlier. Lately it is see a resurgence for males particular those of Italian descent.

Some popular Carmines
drummer Carmine Appice
actor Carmine Giovinazzo
composer/muscian Carmine Coppola
restaurants in L.A., NYC, Palm Beach Garden FL, Bryn Mawr PA

There were some Carmines who were big bosses in the Mafia
Carmine Galante
Carmine Fatco
Carmine Lombardozzi

Carmine is also a strong red color, originally derived from cochineal beetles.

As for whether Carmine is a good or bad name for a child-
I would have children named with their own first name, rather than those of a relative, so that they don't have to deal with the shadow or illumination of their like named ancestry. Let a child be his/her own person. The middle name may be a relative if one wishes to have remembrance, but at least it won't saddle the child since the focus is on first and last names.

There is nothing wrong with that name, but stereotypical mafia stuff comes to mind when the name Carmine is mentioned. I think a happy medium could be found if you choose Carmine as the middle name.

Carmine literally means a deep hue of red.

Any italian name can be associated with mafia, so get over it!
