Unfortunately, the chances of you creating your own original research project are basically null. If you want to find a original project, you will have to either attend a summer research program, or talk with a professor who does research.

And as for major topics, do somethign you're interested in and something that you understand a lot about. There's research going on in every field of biology. However, if u really must know, molecular biology is becoming quite popular, especially with medicine, genetic engineering, and so on.

Unfortunetly all of the major topics will require you to interact with a biologist to get an original project that is first off actually doable and also not too time consuming. Email some professors who do research you are interested in at your local university, make sure it's a research university, tell them you want to be involved and go from there.

First, search this site, the answer comes up every week.

Second, know that biology is subdivided into different domains. There are research focuses on large scale to small scale interactions.

Ecology - study of interaction of organisms and their envt.
physiology - study of the organism and organs
cell biology - study of cells
molecular biology - study of DNA, RNA
biochemistry - study of proteins
lipid biology - study of biolipids

Then there are people who study different types of organisms, ie botanists, zoologist (study plants and animals respectively). Then there are taxonomists, who look at classifications. Then there are biomedical scientists, who look at the biology of human disease (thats what i do). Don't forget evolutionary biologists, who study evolution.

So these are the major catagories, and if you go on to college you'll take a course in each of these areas. So figure out what part interests you.

To me, the projects that involve very little material and scientific skill sets is taxonomy. You can go to a given plot of land, and catagorize what you see in terms of species. There are lots of taxonomic keys around, and it's a fairly straightforward process. The easiest thing to look at are plants, since they don't move and are visible to the eye.

Good luck.

Hm, nicely fly genetic expereiments are especially nicely documented and repeatable. In those experiments you may study genetic characteristics and breed fruit flies and stumble on which characteristics were resecive or dominant. in case you want something extra greater you should apply countless the genome maps for refrence and attempt to study the consequences of genetics on behavoir. Spring is coming round so it should be neat to do an ecological study of spring in an intresting say backyard by technique of backyard section. i'd propose asking yourselfs what you stumble on intresting in biology and then asking what experement can we may be able to do to observe a hypothisis about that intresting element.

if you wan't some simple projects

you can research about herbal medicines
or a substance that can affect a specific aspect of a organism
for example "the effect of different flavored juices on the sweetness of mango"
or
"Banana leaves as pain killer"

these two are available. you can simply do it

^_^
