Ur equation is for dil. HNO3 since NO is evolved :
3Cu + 8HNO3 (dil.) ---> 3Cu(NO3)2 + 2NO + 4H2O

If HNO3 is conc. NO2 is evolved :
Cu + 4HNO3 (conc.) ---> Cu(NO3)2 + 2NO2 + 2H2O .

on left you have 1* Cu, on right you have 1* Cu - good on left you have 1* H, on right you have 2* H - need 1* H on left you have 1* N, on right you have 2* N - need 1* N on left you have 3* O, on right you have 6* O - need 3* O therefore to balance the equation you need to add one H, one N and three O to the left of the arrow. therefore on left hand side should be Cu + 2HNO3 this will balance the equation.
