There are two types of sarcasm:
Mean:
A lot of insecure people like to put down others - I think it makes them feel better about themselves.
Joking:
A lot of intelligent people do this and often even make fun of themselves just because others will find it funny without being offensive.

All types of people use sarcasm, but the motive for it can be a couple of different kinds and yet still strickingly similar. There is the sarcasm that attempts to hide malice (an indirect passive agressive way to cut at someone). And there is the sarcasm that hides fear (generally as a result of fear of expressing one's feelings directly for fear of being judged or being told in some way that one's feelings are invalid). In either case, insecurity is the man cause as the first type is not secure enough to directly confront someone and the second type not secure enough to be seen as he or she is.

Only the ones who wish to speak and not listen. Sarcasm is a wonderful tool in any situation, every smiles to themselves and what not, but when stupid people do it its just wrong. My bad. I mean sometimes I hear the dumbest things over and over with their blank eyes and huge smile looking right at you. I just wanna throw something at them! But I don't I fake it like everyone else that's whats cool about it. Any one can get a laugh if they want to it don't matter who you are or how you say it- sarcasm the language of the universe - power of connection- control - leadership? - A GOOD EXCUSE I say anyway!
Na just messin I never use sarcasm Peace!

I think those who have a dry wit. And from what I've found, many people who use sarcasm are fairly intelligent as well. And probably most come from families who use it so they pick it up as a result.

I would be careful around these folks. When I was using too much sarcasm (and a dear, dear friend FINALLY confronted me on it!!) it was because of unresolved anger. I've also heard it said that sarcasm carries with it 'the expectation of failure." Of course Freud would add our language is 'biting' for a reason. LOL One thing we do know. According to John Gottman's research, criticism in the context of marriages is a predictor of divorce. It's incredibly destructive. I am now very, very careful about filtering negative thoughts so that they don't come OUT of my mouth and I'm very distant from those who choose otherwise.

Sarcasm is just mocking, sardonic words directed at someone It doesn't matter if verbal irony plays into it. Sarcasm doesn't require intelligence.
