They start as teachers, then get their masters in education or school administration, they often get their doctorates in Education as well. They usually have to also pass state boards and certifications for each part of this process.

They of course are teachers first. After a number of years experience as a teacher, they then can apply to a university principals course to learn how to do this. They teach administration, human relations, etc. I know there are a few parts to it and they can only be taken when they are available by the university you have chosen. It can be taken in print or online and most teachers who wnat to become a principal, take online courses.
