I do a lot of music transfers on my external HDD. I was downloading some music from yahoo music when it started to say stuff like delayed write failed and couldn't write bla bla bla. I checked the files already on my external HDD and they worked.. I turned the external HDD off and then tried to turn it back on but it wouldn't turn on but I heard a fan going inside. I unplugged it and then plugged it back in and it turned on that time.

noise is a good indication of failure ..especially a whirring sound from the drive and not the fan.
remember murphy law .. if something is going to break it will break
what i suggest is using tape to store your long term data (it is relatively safe and cheap) .. next big thing is a RAID system which comprise of multiple drives.. now if you work is critical and you need fast reliable 100% uptime file system .. then go for a RAID5 system like NetApp
Lastly even if a drive fails not all is lost, there are ways to get data off the dead magnetic disk ( it is expensive too )

ive been getting similar messages, but my external harddrive - a Seagate 80 GB - made whirring sounds from the very beginning when i bought it new from best buy. I figured it was just loud Its not always loud like that. One year seems extremely shortlived to pay for a harddrive that we store our data on.?

I have no answers for you i guess, just empathy.

2.5" not uncomplicated drives run on 5Volts. USB factors as a lot as 5Volts. hence there is not any situation in powering the stress utilising USB purely, assuming the pc is proving a respectable 5Volts (eg. utilising an unpowered USB hub ought to reason the not uncomplicated stress to not have sufficient potential). actually there are already 2.5" not uncomplicated stress adapters and enclosures that ought to attempt this.

Hi. If you heard the bearings in your HD it's probably time for a new one, and sooner rather than later.
