Someone above said that CA has the highest paid teachers. It may be true that teachers in CA make the greatest amount of money, but it is also true that we have the highest standard of living. A ROOM in a house in the Bay Area of CA can cost around $1000 a month. An actual apartment two or three times that. Forget about a house, it is out of the range of someone whose main source of income is teaching. Mainly that means that a teacher cannot live on their salary alone in this area even though it is probably the one of the highest in the country.

If I were you, I would ask where are the places in the country that a teacher can support themselves on their salary.

Hi. I don't think you can go by the states...more by the "type of school" and the "area." For example; when I was 15 and spent summer w/ friend from Fresno CA & his mother was a teacher at a school that did ALL of their work on computers(teachers got paid BOO-KOO bucks)and I am from a little spot on the ground in MO; with NOTHING where teachers constantly griped about their "crappy" salary. Have heard others make comments like "Iowa pays teachers better than Mo." My older stepsister use to sub & my younger step-sister just started subing recently and they have both made same decision...Rather substitute teacher than to be Full-time teacher...because NOT only do they not have to make commitment to same place and people everyday...w/ a set salary paid once a mth. They would rather substitute teach at different schools making good set daily pay and if signed up w/ enough schools...iif they wanted to or were able to they could substitute all week....and turns out to be better pay...but even if they dont work that much they have time for their other job, needs, responsibilities, wants...

I don't know the answer, but I wanted to remind you to take differential cost of living expenses into account. CA or NY probably pay the most, but I don't think it makes up for the difference in how expensive it is to live in those states (at least in the urban areas).

Good luck! And thanks for being a teacher. :o)
