Below is an American Sonnet. I built the pattern when I got tired of the classic patterns. It's a bit harder to put together , but a lot of fun.

An "American" Sonnet

The 20s were a prime time,
and everyone who could would,
swill bathtub gin and near beer,
from some notorious rough tough.
They'd dance away the night tight,
in dresses that were of cloth froth,
for life was always pay day,
a flappered "jazz age" flick kick.

Then 30 followed smash crash,
depression murdered mock-stock.
The job-world lay abed dead,
head covered well with black sack.

Old Hoover sang a rote note,
and Roosevelt won the vote tote.

steps on how to write a sonnet:
1. Decide what you want to write your sonnet about.
2. Decide what style you want to write your sonnet in.
3. Note that the Petrarchan style consists of two identical quatrains (the octave) and a closing sestet in the pattern ABBA ABBA CDE CDE where each letter represents a rhyme (i.e., a's should rhyme with a's and b's should rhyme with b's).
4. Come up with some lines in iambic pentameter.
5. Get writing!

Nobody has mentioned the Shakespearean sonnet form, so I had better get that into the conversation:

It unfolds in four distcinct sections: lines 1-4, lines 5-8, lines 9-12, and the couplet (lines 13-14). The rhyme scheme is: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.
