Some films will get passed to the B-theaters. Some will go back to the archives of the studio. Some people actually buy the theater films, because they have good projectors in their home. I would imagine that most of it is destroyed after it is sent back to the studio warehouse. That would create a huge storage problem for just one movie release.

Typically, the studio redistributes it oversees in Third World countries. For example, in India or The Philippines where patrons only pay 20 cents to go to the movies, the theatres cannot afford to pay for "first run" movies. The film quality is poor since the movies has played so many times. Eventually all films are retired and the materials are recycled or just thrown away.

depending on the theatre the actual film may be vaulted and stored
the studio doesn not get the film back they have a different copy of the move.
when it goes from mainstream movies it moves down to the dollar movie theaters and then the rights of the movie leave the public domain so that it can be reproduced on dvd. the film itself may be auctioned, archived, or sold.

When a theater is done showing a movie they send it back to the warehouse. A theater only rents the movie for a certain length of time. They go from theater to theater. After a certain lengt of time they will go to the dollar theaters , international theater, and some will go into storage.

I'm not sure about movies today, but my grandpa told me that in his day movies went around from showhall to showhall in our state. So once a movie had a run in like my town, then it would get sent to your town then over to the next and so on.
