part of it is our own fault. for the most part we lacked the ability to see that too much emphasis on multicultural diversity could come back to bite us in the butt. effectively, america is a 'melting pot' of cultures, but political agendas and political correctness seem to have incapacitated the ability of the latin americans to successfully assimilate.

the rest is because of culture. we have never had this problem before because the vast majority of immigrants came from western and central europe, where cultural and ethnic identities did not take precedence over nationalization and fitting in.

latin culture is a clan based society. western culture's basic unit of communal production is the nuclear family, whereas latin culture's basic unit is the extended family. the closeness within the latin societal units adhere its members strictly to a cultural identity code that inadvertantly discriminates assimilation. im not saying that they do this on purpose, but only that i think it inhibits their capacity for profit in a western society. most successful latino's, consequently you'll find, distance themselves from a clan based way of life.

you'll see this in all clan based culture, arab culture specifically, that in a clan based society, there are deep identity ties between everyone. if you disturb the few, you disturb the masses.
