depending on what type of vampire you're asking about, there are several answers.
Folklore vampire: this vampire is one from legend. forget Lestat or Armand, the vampire from folklore is purely a reanimated corpse that sucks blood.

"real" vampire: "Sang". a Sang vampire is a Human, for whatever reason, feels the need to consume blood in order to obtain the energy from it. some have sexual reasons, some have mental reasons, some have 'physical' reasons. but for whatever reason they are a human, that will admit their own mortality, but that they 'need blood' symptoms of withdrawl from such blood typically include headaches, lack of energy/lethargy, photosensitivitiy and many other symptoms, dependant solely on the individual vampire.

'real' vampire: Psy: a Psy vampire is one that does not drink blood, but rather 'drinks' energy. ever walked into a room where there was a lot of people that were excited, like at a concert, and felt how the room felt almost 'electric'? Psy vampires feed off of this energy. each specific vampire has their own preference for the type of energy they like. Some like Fear, Some like Happy, but the fact of the matter is that whatever emotion they are feeding off of, they aquire that emotion.

and of course there are the vampires of recent books that are tragic heros, forced into an eternity of drinking blood and forced into the shadows.

Vampires are ancient mythological creatures. They are bloodsucking creatures. In our modern terminology they are not sucking blood, but the life-force the blood contains.

Humanoid vampire is originally a human turned into a vampire by...

1. renouncing god
2. dark spirits or demons
3. the devil
4. by an other vampire
5. by spells and curses
6. by god itself

Humanoid vampires are vulnerable to sunlight, garlic, silver and the crucifix (or at least it is the most known and accepted)

they are bats, they are god knows what, but they are not the vampires of stories and fantasies.
the term vampire comes from europe and a very bloodthirsty lord who used to behead his enemies and put the heads on stakes around his castle, for his pleasure, and of course, to scare any who might think to stand up to him. it is a play on his name that the word vampire [of storybook fame] came into being, possibly even in transylvania. this is the one we scare each othe with. blood drinking cultures, and cannibalism were not a rare occurance in past cultures either. then, and probably now, although we don't eat many people now, we were just another form of meat.

-they are creatures that live off the blood of other creatures especially humans
-they dont fly or explode in the daylight
-they are weak/almost mortal during day
-they only appear to fly because they have the power of 40 man and can leap very high, rather than fly.
- they are more or less like any animal that needs to survive, only scared to openly do so as humans would find a way to kill them and forever bother them....

pS: I do believe in them...

There's also a rare cellular disease where this story may have come from. People with the disease actually have to ingest blood to repair some cellular problems in their body. I don't know the name of it, but maybe some of the legend began with this.

we are beings who have to take life from the living to sustain us. the older we get the less we need to feed though. we just want to live like the rest of you. and be left alone. there are too many of you hunting us and their time will come!
