I'm guessing your the buyer? If so the answer is YES! They are professionals & will tell you condition of house. They're not working "for" you or "for" seller, so they just do a major report on house itself. You do hire them so they do the inspection "for" you, but the actual inspection process & report would be the same even if the seller hired them. There's NO WAY a friend or handyman etc could give you same in depth report, you just can't see everything they are trained to inspect. If your serious about buying a place, to protect your investment get one. In fact I thought it was required for a home loan? I had one & its a super bargaining tool to get a better price &/or stuff fixed before you move in.
Good Luck :~))

Oh absolutely get an inspector and be certain to check them out too. They are very good at finding all those (little) things that the current owner just forgot about or didn't even know about themselves. It will be worth the money. And it will prevent you from buying a house that has a HUGE hidden problem....that could break your bank.
I use this same process to purchase a used car. And I've bought a couple of really terrific cars like this. It's the same concept. Know what you're getting yourself into.

You need a home inspector, or else you need to bring along a friend who owns a house and knows a lot about home repair. The owner of the house wants to minimize the problems, and no real estate agent is going to be truly honest with you about maintenance and condition of the building. You need your own expert to give you an idea of how much money you will have to spend after buying the place.

If you are buying a home - absolutely !!
A reputable home inspector can save you thousands in unexpected maintenance costs later.
They inspect places that I would never think of. Plus they can foresee problems that may occur in the future.
For the few hundred dollars that they charge, it is a worthwhile investment.

That all depends on if your trying to sell the house and the new buyers demand it, and if your not, how much common sense you posses...
