how would i solve this but turn it into an equation first?


The sum of four times a number and 17 is equal to the sum of seven times the same number and 2. ??? h.e.l.p. please

easy.

4x+17=7x+2

so, subtract 4x from both sides and subtract the 2 from both sides to get

15=3x

divide both sides by 3 and you get

x=5

4x = four times a number
7x = seven times the number

4x + 17 = 7x + 2 combine similar terms
4x - 7x = 2 - 17
-3x = -15 divide by -3

I'd give the number a symbol to represent it's value. Say φ. Now the problem says that
4*φ+17 = 7*φ+2. => φ = 5
and you're all done.

If i understand you correctly i get this:

4x+17=7x+2

Do your own basic Algebra next time. The answer is x = 5.
