Sounds like a class where you need to read the book. If the teacher says that the tests are based on notes and lecture only, challenge him if one of the questions were not answered in the notes or lecture. If the tests are also based on info from the book, you're just going to have to read the book to pass this class. Don't wait until the last two days before a test to study, that's way too late. Stay on top of reading and study the study guide or notes as you go if they are provided at that time. Whatever you are currently doing definitely needs to change. You might ask the teacher to suggest how to study for his particular class (and without sounding like it's his/her fault for your bad grade). Good luck!

Don't rely just on memorization. Check out each chapter on History Channel and other sites (just spend a few minutes) and see it as a story. Understand what happened and why. Then look over your notes, and the study guide and get ahold of the names and dates. It really helps to buy a few packages of army men (the ones that are a buck) and act out the stories. Even the ones that aren't wars. Have a friend from class help you (especially if they are passing, but even if they aren't), it will stick in your head better. Anytime you have to memorize date, make up a song or chant, and talk with your teacher and parents, you would be surprised how much they can help you get ready for the next test.
