It is the captains job to see to the safety of his passengers & crew.
That means he should be the last one off the ship.
Some times that might be to late & he goes down with the ship.

I dont know but once all of the passangers have gotten off of the ship it seems absolutely ridiculous and dramatic to go down with the ship. This is not the titantic.
