Your question covers what my professor went over for the past two weeks in class...
About population growth and the amout of people in the world, whether its too much or too little, it all depends on who you ask.
-Some may want population to decline
-Others see only some populations as problematic
-Others think population could incrase
>>Humans can be a very valuable resource
>>There are also geopolitical reasons
>>Ideological reasons
The thing is the more people there is, the more hands there will be to do work. There is enough resources in the world to feed everyone but the thing is the resources aren't spread evenly. There are more people in one place than in others and not everyone makes the same amount of money...so there's alot of things to think about. The current population is just over 6 billion...

It is estimated that by the year 2050 there will be 9 billion people on planet earth. More than half of these people will live in cities. In order to answer this question we must first determine if earth has the resources to support all of these people.

As a global whole, I'd say the population is as big as it ought to get; of course, I don't imagine that's going to stop people from reproducing, particularly in countries where the prevailing religion doesn't permit birth control.

Yeah, it's getting too large probably if people aren't able to get enough food to eat. I don't think the U.S. is overpopulated though.
