your overall high school grade point average from all grades needs to be an average of at least 3.0. But i have heard from friends whose kids are applying to college right now that even 4.0 students are being denied acceptance to UC schools. Really now you need 3.5 - 4.0 or higher and very high SAT scores.

They usually mean that your GPA should be a solid 3.0 in your courses. They look at your core courses to see how you did in them and your other courses. It is harder to get a 3.0 or higher in an AP class that it is to get a 3.0 in P.E They look at your test scores and what extra curricular activities you are in.

overall high school gpa. but even that doesnt guarantee nothing. south florida rejected me despite a 3.5 overall.

If they ask for a "cumulative" GPA, then they mean for all classes. If you aren't sure, you should call the university.
