While the British did attack the U.S. first in the war of 1812, they did so by sea not by charging down from the north. We attacked BNA hoping to force the Brits to withdraw from attacking the East Coast of America to defend their land in the north. We didn't have an exceptionally strong Navy at the time and by attacking the North we hoped to make the Navy battles inconsequential. Another part of the thinking was we could engage any Redcoat reinforcements on the continent before they could run rampant through America and link up with the comrades landing in D.C. Baltimore and Charleston. If we had been more successful with our attacks we might have forced the British from the continent entirely.

Hello: What idiot assigned this question.

By 1812, the United States of America had existed for at the very least 25 years; and the British Attacked the United States.

Anyone telling you otherwise is ignorant in the extreme. Did they teach you that the United States Troops attacked and burned Washington D.C. and the White House?

For God's sakes where do questions like this originate. I would immediately tell your parents that you are being asked to give a response to a question that is illogical, uninformed and totally bogus, and that your instructor will fail you if you don't respond the way the instructor wants you to.
