I was given an aquarium by my cousin. She says it is a 20 gallon or bigger. The diameters are 24" long by 16 3/4" tall by 12" from front of the tank to the back of the tank. Can anyone tell me how many gallons my tank is from these measurements? Thanks!! :-)

The tank holds 20 gallons.A gallon of water always takes up 231 cubic inches.Your tank;24 x 12 x 16.75 divided by 231 will equal 20.8 approx.

The tank holds 17 gallons. It is marketed as a 20H. Tanks manufacturers measure the outside of the tank. By doing this it adds a few gallons to the measurement. The actual amount it holds will be about 17 though.
(With a 75 gallon tank, measuring on the outside adds 11 gallons! 75 gallon tanks actually hold 64)

She's right. It's just a tad over 20 gallons. To get the volume in inches we multiply the Length by Width by Height so 24" x 16.75" x 12" =4,824 inches.

A US liquid gallon hover just around 231 cubic inches.

4,824/231=20.88
