Unions are the link between the boss and his workers sometimes Unions do get over board ad force the goverment to hire over seas workers, but if managed correctly they can be a voice and with a lot of people a strong voice.

If their weren't crocked bosse their wouldn't be a need for a Union. I like them because thier good to me my boss hates them because he has to pay us 35 dollars instead of 25. That rich pig has the money to give more.

Do you want to know the real story? or just blather abut stuff you have no knowledge about. Are their some corrupt folks in Unions? Hell yes among leaders and followers, are such folk a majority, or even a large minority no, would you be better off without them Hell no!

You like the Orwellian "right to work" laws? Move to those states and get paid half wages and no health insurance. Oh and "right to work" only applies to regular workers, not "professionals" where you have to join the "Union" so they can keep prices high.

I knew a skilled heart surgeon who could not get a job without starting over at an American Medical school, though he had worked in this country for a corporation putting their heart valve in thousands of dogs for testing.

A better answer than unions would be a mechanism that people actually got paid for their work, and were treated well in the rest of the ways people want to be treated, but without a union to hold the Boss accountable, who else can?

while i am not a fan of unions, unions have done some pretty good things in this country. there was a time when a boss could pay you anything they wanted, unions gave us a living wage, medical insurance, a limit on working hours, days off, pensions, 401Ks, and so one. one other little thing that unions did requires you to go back to a time in the 70's and early 80's, to a time when unions ran pretty much everything. they were in charge. and during that time the unions kept illegal immigrants in check. you couldn't get a job almost anywhere without being in a union, the unions were very pro america and very in favor of keeping money here. so at that time if you were an illegal alien you could not get a job, they forced you out. getting hired anywhere was almost impossible for them and they tended to stay out. so in those ways unions were great. and for the last one i sometimes hope they would come back and get as strong as they once were.

Unions protect people from lazy bosses who make money off of workers. For Example, bosses in the early 20th century made thousands of dollars a week while most workers often got around $3 a week. $10 a week was usually the highest pay one could get. And that's working up to 12-14 hours a day. Unions changed all that. Like your 8 hour workday? You can thank Unions. like your high pay? Unions. Like having sick days and medical leave without your job being filled by someone else the instant you don't show up? Unions. I would think that you would also be in favor of a workplace that is safe to work in with very little risk of physical injury. Unions Again.

The list goes on and on, and it mainly just proves how ignorant you are.

I bet you were born in 1988. Read up on unions, and see what kind of horrible conditions existed before they were formed.

Unions are probably no longer the answer to work problems, because they have priced themselves out of the market, have been too involved with crime in some cases, and because most companies will now just close their doors rather than sign a fair contract, BUT, there was a time that without unions, workers were treated like slaves!!!

Do some research before you write!

EDIT: To the Wal-mart shopper: Do you know that you are supporting illegal aliens when you shop there? Oh! you don't care? As long as the stuff is cheap and unions aren't involved?? Typical Repuglican!

Unions came along a long time ago, when people had to work 6-7 days a week, very long hours, and there were even children working the same way. There was a time, well into the last century, when rich employers were content to work their employees to death, for no pay, no safety, etc. Unions were started to protect workers from this and give them rights and bargaining power when they had none as individuals. They were very effective and useful for a long time. But, when corporations went global, hiring labor all over the world for the lowest possible wage, starting the same pattern over again only overseas, American workers, who had secured good wages, benefits, and retirement for themselves were once again under assault. Companies inside the US were having to compete with companies overseas who paid their workers a fraction of what union labor was costing, so there was a systematic effort to break the unions, partly because of this competition, and partly out of greed. Unions are now almost non-existent in the US with only 11% of the workforce as members, and the numbers are still declining. What they accomplished for the American worker was tremendous, and made our workers the envy of the world. As unions disappear, we are once again seeing the consequences of having no organized support for American workers, long hours, no benefits as corporations seek to make everyone "temp" employees , retirement is becoming non-existent again, and it is rapidly becoming "every man for himself."
There have been many excesses after unions became powerful, but when they are gone completely, workers may well look back on their heyday as the golden age, and seek to once again organize themselves against the rich and powerful.

I have worked in unionized workplaces before, and yes, I have suffered more from busting my @$$ to cover for lazy coworkers than I ever have from management decisions. Yet I am in favor of unions and I'll tell you why.

Without unions this would be a third world country, and it's no coincidence that when labor is "disciplined" by direct competition with third world slaves, then wages and benefits disappear. We're seeing this everywhere with the flood of cheap plastic chinese krap sweeping our manufacturing base away, and with the invasion of illegals with the acquiesence of government and industry to replace genuine literate citizens. If you think unions aren't needed, then you need to live in a country without them such as China.

Are unions perfect? Hell no. My current union in particular is using my dues to lobby in favor of illegal aliens. Past unions have been in with the mob. But like any institution, it is only as good as its members. We all whine about politicians, but we get what we deserve because deep down we just don't give a sh*t. If you actually do something to fight for the good of all, THEN you can complain.

As for people who despise public employees and their unions, I would ask them to briefly pause and consider the state of the general public. The breakdown of civil society is nearly complete, yet public employees - cops, teachers, firefighters - all have to deal with the most retarded people imaginable and enforce rules. Hell yes they need protection. FROM US.

Well, I see your point, in that it's because of selfish lazy people this fabulous system doesn't work. But as the kid of an aircraft mechanic, the Union is a blessing when companies are merging and want to cut thousands of jobs. Sad thing is, they succeed only half the time.

Scarlett: WalMart forces many of our American companies into China by basically blackmailing them to reduce their prices. Who wouldn't get cheaper labor when faced with a corporation like WalMart?

Dude it's the UFCW all the way! There are people who pay union dues to the UFCW. What do they get in return? Minimum wage! Can you believe that? There are people paying union dues to the UFCW and they are making minimum wage! Do they have benefits? Some do but many don't! Unions were good a long time ago, but today there is just no need for them.

Maybe you think you are secure in your job. Then one day they say you are no longer needed. BYE BYE. No recourse. No protection. By now you are in your mid 40's. No one wants you. Unless you have a special job skill. There are a million college kids they can choose from over you at less the pay. Someday this will by you because you have no union to protect you.

My great-grandfather was a coal miner. He was paid in script, which he could only spend at the company store. He lived in company housing. When, after years of working on his knees in cramped spaces, his legs needed to be amputated, he lost his job and his company housing. While his sons were in Europe fighting WWII.

That's why there's unions - because people should not be treated like commodities. Only a fool or a millionaire opposes unions. Weekends only exist because of unions. the 8 hour day only exists because of unions. Safe working conditions only exist because of unions.

To this day, states with unions have much higher wages than states without. Don't drink the bossman's koolaid.

Anyone who shops at walmart is an idiot. This company is driving down wages around the world - to be a supplier for them, you must reduce costs 5% a year!!!!
