Dowload these two programs for free:

DVD Decrypter (To decrypt the protection software and "RIP" the DVD to your PC, much like you would an Audio CD):
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_decrypter.cfm

DVD Shrink (to allow you to burn "Back Up" copies):
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm

Works like a charm everytime! Be sure to read the manuals good and it walks you through step-by-step!

There are applications you can get to do this, but I don't think there is anything native to Windows. In fact, some PCs won't even let you play a DVD without specialize software.

My Dad uses a program called "DVD Shrink". It can copy all the files from a DVD onto your hard disk.

Well, unless you have a software installed already, you have to download a program. You can use programs like DVDShrink, DVDRipper, etc. DVDShrink is probably the best, considering it's free. Just Google it and you'll find it.

I think you need an additional program to do it and you may not even be allowed to buy the software now.

There really is no other way unless you have the program to do it. Only certain programs allow this because they have the neccessary decoders to either burn the .vob file to hard drive or converters to change the .vob file to .avi or .wmv ...etc.
