Also, i'd really like a local to answer this question, please! not some generic answer about the caverns, because we are already going there.

THANKS!

I'm from the alamogordo/tularosa/ruidoso area, so i have been to the caverns MANY a time, but my hubby never has... i've just never been to carlsbad proper for anything but a drive through. are there any motorcycle or salvage yards there?

We moved to Carlsbad from Los Angeles, CA...

The best place to stay is The Stevens Motel.. it is a Best Western... They include a full breakfast and it is worth it.. They also have a bar and entertainment...

The Living Desert State Park Zoo... check out the new bear... she is a cutey..

Pavement on the Pecos.. skate park if you are into that...

Paddle Boat on the Pecos River... depending on the weather...

Into hiking?? McKittrick Canyon... again depends on the weather...

Take a drive up to Queens for a burger... very nice drive..

Walk or bike along the river...

You didn't mention when you are planning this or how long you are going to be here...but there are events at the beach.. Car show, Chili cook-off, art and crafts first weekend in June...

The UFO museum in Roswell... interesting and remember to put a pin in the map to mark where you're from..

(There are no spas here) sorry... it's a small town of about 26,000 people... Spring here is great... Summer is hot!!!

The Caverns are always 53° underground... bring a sweater or jacket and shoes for walking.. depending on how long you linger, maybe a 3 hour tour..
Dog Canyon or Brantley Lake... day trips that are good for a drive and picnics..

Local art museum.... or into antiques?? lots of little shops!!

Enjoy!!

I would never laugh at anyones choice of location for an anniversary.
It is the odd and unusual places that are the most memorable - and that's exactly what you want for an anniversary.
Added to which, I love desert landscapes.

~~ You should enjoy the Caverns NP, I like doing tours of caves and the like. You might also enjoy the Living Desert Zoo.

~~ Carlsbad has many parks, sports and recreation facilities.
Tennis, Golf, Go-Kart Raceway, Shooting Range, Archery Range etc.

~~ You should check out and see if anyone is performing at the Performing Arts & Exhibition Centre (Willie Nelson has performed there)

~~ Have a look at this link to the Riverwalk Recreation Centre and see all the activities they provide:
http://www.cityofcarlsbadnm.com/community_development/riverwalk/index.html

~~ The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce website has other interesting information on dining, museums, shopping and accommodation (hotels and B&B's) etc:
http://carlsbadchamber.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=section&id=6&Itemid=55

~~ Super 8, Best Western, Days Inn and Motel 6 all have locations in Carlsbad, NM.
Plus other private non-chain motels.
You will have no trouble finding a good clean place to stay.
The Chamber of Commerce link above have these Motels listed.
Including addresses, phone numbers and links for reservations.

~~ Did you realise Carlsbad is only 75 miles from Roswell, about an hour and a half drive?
You should not visit NM without going to check out all things alien!
