I'm using a 19" Sony Trinitron CRT type of screen right now. It's about 6 years old and I think maybe getting blurry around the outside edges and stuff...

I don't think anyone knows what they're talking about.

The refresh rate. The rate in which the monitor refreshes the images on the screen is the easiest, cheapest, and best way to keep your eyes from hurting and avoiding headaches.

I'm on the computer for about 12hrs just at work. I lower the refresh rate (65Hz) and no problems anymore. Lower the brightness as it helps also

Control Panel>Display
Click Tab Settings>Monitor(Maybe system specific)

The naked eye doesn't pick up and screen refreshing much like how movies and made. You know. Most human can only see up to 23 fps separately.

I agree a LCD screen would be better for your eyes but as long as you're using a CRT you could try adjusting the refresh rate to a higher level if you can and that might help a bit. As to how to do it, well it might depend a bit I think on your video card but have a look at this site, it'll give you information about the whole refresh rate thing and then you can decide whether you think it'd be better higher or lower.

Also you didn't mention how often you use your computer and how often you have a break from it. Generally it's a good idea to take a small break once an hour. Also eye drops might help if your eyes are getting particular sore or itchy.

LCDs are awsome for the eyses... but headaches are a resualt of lighting... always have lights behind you not anywhere visible in front of you, that will give you a bad headache... also floesent lights flicker even though you cant tell and when looking at your CRT monitor flickering at the same time at a different speed really effect your visual nurons and synaptic receivers making them work in 3 ways instead of just one.. the three ways being 1. basic light 2.motion of the screen flicker 3. floresent flicker at a different rate... if you have floresent lights and you cant get around them then I would suggest natural lighting floresent bulbs or regular "warm" light bulbs... turning the lights off all together is still bad due to a lack of light making the flicker more extreme as your trying to concentrate on what your doing and thinking about what your having for lunch...
