I don't know about the reward, but measuring a snake's skin is no way to determine it's actual length. The skin of a snake can be stretched quite a lot after it has been removed, which led to myths of 70 foot anacondas and other such 'evidence' of snakes of unbelievable length.
Again, I've never heard of a specific reward, but am sure there are many private collectors or zoos which would pay far more than $10,000 to have a live or dead uncut specimen of the world's largest rattlesnake.

I seriously doubt it. 8' is the longest snake on record, so there has to have been at least one that long. That sum of money is not going to be offered for a snake that is 1/4" longer than one already measured. Look at it this way: if the record-holder is still alive, it is already longer than 8 feet.
"The average size of a mature Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake is 3 - 6 feet in length. The longest length on record is 96 inches (8 feet). The Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake is the largest rattlesnake, as well as the largest venomous snake, native to the United States."

I live just south of there, and yes there are rattlesnakes in the area, and Florida pygmy rattlers, since we are in Florida, it wouldn't be a Carolina pygmy, you find those in Carolina. If it has rough looking scales and curls up and rattles at you STAY AWAY. the Eastern Diamondback is brown with whitish looking lines on its back resembling a diamond pattern, and very rough looking keeled scales its head is thin in front and broad and round around the rear of the jaws. Pygmy's are usually darker/redish brown with black striping kinda zigzag on the back, but 2 ft would be a really big one, they normally only get about 18-20 inches where as the eastern can get as big as 6.5-7ft . If you need to there are professionals that will come and remove it, for a fee. They are in the phone book or look up nuisance animal removal Sarasota county fl, and it should bring up a few numbers for you to call.

I don't know if the reward is true but a friend I knew in Fla. killed a nine ft. long rattlesnake while putting up a fence in Clearwater, Fla. He had to have a special 10 ft. X 12 in. board cut to mount the skin. It lacked mere inches from each end when stretched. It's probably still around some where down there.
