No. They spend too much drilling for their natural gas to make any money selling it. They still haven't been able to make capitalism work, they are still stuck about 30 years behind the rest of the world. Their educational system is deficient except for the chosen few.

There are two superpowers (for whatever it is worth) the US and China. If Africa and South America form economic unions like the EU there will be no need for superpowers in the world.

The only people comcerned about superpowers are countries like Russia and France who once were, or countries like India who are so jealous they can't focus on anything but being one.

It's ironic that most of the countries that split from the USSR are now democratic - and Russia seems to be slowly but surely sinking back into communism. I don't think Putin is helping the situation much either.
If they are to ever fully recover, they first need to rid them selves of their internal corruption and power struggles and get their economy back up and running.
The Russians proved to be a formidable foe throughout the cold war, and prior to that, they taught the Nazis a thing or two about why it isn't good military strategy to try and march into Moscow - it wasn't quite as easy as marching into Paris.

Not in the near future. Most of the country is undeveloped and run down.

That is a really good question.... I would say maybe. They have the nukes, but their economy isn't that great. Much of their military has been hurt because of lack of funding.... They reminded me of a drunken boxer.... they might be down, but I would never count them out.
