James Hilton's book The Lost Horizon comes to mind: The valley of Shangri-la is a peaceful place, taking from the world around it, but remaining aloof from all the negative actions of that world. Although idyllic, it is not the paradise of the Bible, nor of any Western philosophy, invoking instead much that is Eastern.
I know you're not referring to this but Alan Dean Foster in his trilogy The Damned portrays a wonderful depiction of a purported idyllic force, called the Amplitur, seeking control of the universe. The rebels fighting this force cross paths with Earth in the first book in this series (A Call to Arms) and the result is simply amazing. Foster really has the capacity to help me see how incredibly far we have to go in order to survive our own potential to destroy the planet. Enjoy!!
