so there is nothing scientific about the hobbit? not even being invisable and talking to animals???? :(

Bilbo has a clock on the mantlepiece, that's the closest to scientific i can think of. I LOVE the first answer! lol!

Actually...Bending light to become invisible isn't impossible. Communicating with animals is also possible (sometimes called a whisperer, like horse whisperer or a dog whisperer), just not in a human language like English. On the island of Flores small fossils of a human species were discovered that are nicknamed hobbits.

Hobbits, being made-up beings, were given very natural talents by J.R.R. Tolkien, their creator. These talents never included talking to animals, but did include being able to hide so quickly and easily they might seem to be invisible by other races.
Bilbo's magic ring was not a device created by science, but by a cruel and perverted nature, that of Sauron.
