There were usually restrictions- A rich roman man could not marry a Christian woman because of religious conflicts for example. However, there were not that many restrictions.

really if you had money you could do whatever you wanted but social class was "everything" so if a rich man was to marry a poor servant woman he would be looked down apon by everyone in the town. back then rich people had nothing better to really do besides talk about other people (most like people today) so if a man or woman wanted to stay high in society they marry the same class. this is how it was in almost every race and still is because to be considered high class you had to have money, today rich people marry rich people

There were a great many restrictions in Roman culture as to who one could marry. It was a way of keeping the separation in the classes. One could, however, have a mistress or lover of any class they chose, but marriage was strictly regulated, as was everything else about Roman society.

the parents had control of who their kids married, it was more of a merger of families with money , the poor people just went off with whoever they wanted unless someone wanted to buy a young woman, which they often did .
