Why is a shirt a shirt, but jeans is a pair of jeans?

it's like you have a pair of legs, so the jean has 2 slots to put them, so it is 2, and 2 is called a pair

Hmmm...interesting question, and the only thing I can come up with is because we put a "pair" of legs into them!!

Sounds better than just jean to me.
'I spilled some coffee on my jean' - 'time to wash my jean' - 'I need to buy a new jean'
