Because males only have one X, therefore if they get an X with that trait, they show the phenotype.

Females have two so if one copy is dodgy the other will dominate and she will be fine. She needs two dodgy X's, and the chances of that are a lot lower.

Males have only one X-chromosome, so when they get a recessive gene on that X, there is not a second X-chromosome to over-ride it. It's like not being able to have a second opinion or to have a second chance at getting a different gene.

Females have two X-chromosomes, so when they get a recessive gene on one X, they still have another X-chromosome that offers a second opinion or second chance.
