just say that if 3500 is 5%, 7000 would be 10%
that times 10 is 70,000 and BOOM, there you go kid!

your teacher probably wants you to use proportions, so put 3500 over 5 = x over 100 (3500/5 = x/100)
I don't know if that's right, but you get the idea.

You are letting the words & the numbers & the formulae overwhelm you. All of the previous answers are correct. But this is a problem that you should be able to do in your head. 5 % is the same as 1/20th. So simply multiply $ 3500 by 20. Too big to do in your head ? Then multiply $ 3500 by 10 (simply put another zero at the end) to get $ 35,000 and then multiply that by 2 ( multiplying by 10 and then by 2 is the same as multiplying by 20). I feel that it is a real shame that so many Math teachers allow their students to feel overwhelmed instead of just showing them how easy it is.

Using proportions:
shortage ($3500) is to sales Volume as 5 is to 100

or: 3500/X = 5/100
so: 5X = 3500 x 100
5 X = 350000
X = 350000/5
X = 70000
Sales volume is $70,000.

first you would take 5/100 five percent over 100% and cross multiply 3500/x now x will = the sales volume.

Answer $70,000
