2001 kia rio. 100k miles. Good condition except: when it is cold and i try to drive 55 before it completely warms up it starts losing power, check engine light comes on, code "ping sensor" and "misfire sensor". car will slow down to a stop regardless of how much gas i give it. If i turn off the motor and give it a few seconds and restart it runs great. This is inconvenient on a bridge on the interstate when everyone else is going 70mph. Been doing this for years. Tonight same thing, i failed to let it warm up and it did the same thing. only this time stopping and restarting it did not fix it. now it runs rough and when i switch over the heat it starts losing power, may be a coincidence. car will gain speed if i kinda tap on the gas pedal at intervals enough to keep me away from traffic. Ive had the fuel filter changed and a tune up and it did not fix it. does not really do this in hot summer months. What could be wrong?

by the way as for kia being a bad car it has over 100k and only cost $8k. the belt squeels and they are as tight as they can get within tolerances. perhaps it is the alternator going bad? but then would it be doing this for 4 years?

I believe that vehicle uses a Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP Sensor). If that is the case, it and the Air Intake Temperature Sensor (AIT Sensor) would be my first suspects. They can cause your timing and fuel mixture to be off. The ECM uses the MAP Sensor in conjunction with the AIT Sensor to determine the air charge entering the engine, and adjust ignition timing and fuel mixture. The final adjustment in the loop is made when the O2 sensor and the Ping or Knock Sensor provide feedback on detonation and/or too rich/lean condition. It's a constant loop run by the computer hundreds of times a second. As a result, you may also have a bad O2 or Knock Sensor... but I've had good luck on MAP and AIT cars by replacing them first.

Good luck!

dont you have a 100000 mile warrenty??does it caugh when it begins to go or does it just stop running?/ Geez i dont even want to guess could be computer shutting down the gas supply or it may be changine the rich or lean. It could be a bad fuel pump but if its been doing it for years it should have gone out long before now. if it coughs id say it was fuel but its so hard to say. man good luck dude after rereading the post i gotta ssay that you have a haywire computer the light says misfire it gets going one of the other posts talked about a map sensoe when it does it open the hood and find the sensor it is probobley coming off of the air intake or there abouts its about 3inch by 3 inch on other cars any way knock on it with your knuckles if it is it it will respond quickley.again but then it kindaa resets Put a diagonostic on it go to a independent will cost you about 60 bucks your computer has a memory and it will all show then the machenic has to duplicate the problem hey maybe he can fix it from the readings. I still ldont understand why the dealer couldnt fix it

Have you had the timing belt replaced? It may be worn (expanded) or the timing may be off a little. When warm it is not a big deal when cold you may be misfiring a little.

Also a cracked plug wire can cause timing issues, sometimes when they warm up and flex better they work for a while.

Like Mikey and frank f have reported. You did not get the entire tale. there is not any way the police or each person although the owner of the motor vehicle is going to ought to pay for damages and prefer reported right that's why. If spikes are used on a motor vehicle, it became maximum probably in a pursuit. this signifies that the driver is breaking the regulation for not pulling over. (inspite of if it became the incorrect motor vehicle) At this element the driver is going to be arrested and is committing against the law. The police use spike strips to end the motor vehicle, and driver is arrested. Any damage to the motor vehicle it quite is led to is the accountability of the driver or proprietor at this element.

Thanks for the heads up on Kia.

Sounds like you have some kind of computer malfunction going on. You might look into changing it out.

But that's not experience talking, I'm just talking.
