For the 20 unsold program, it would cost $1.50x20=$30

For each program sold, there is a profit of $3-$1.50=$1.50

In order to have a overall profit of $15, the profit for the sold program got to be $15+$30 (cost of unsold program), that is $45.

A program is sold at a profit of $1.50, thus in order to have overall $45 profit, u need to sold 30 program ($45/$1.50)

30 sold program + 20 unsold program = 50 Program

Let the no. of programs hans bought be X

now he spent 1.50 * X

He earned (X - 20) * 3

Now profit = Money earned - Money spent

So, 15 = (X - 20) * 3 - 1.5 * X

=> 15 = 3X - 60 -1.5X
=> 75 = 1.5X
=> X = 75/1.5
=> X = 750/15 = 50(Answer)

1.50X +15 = 3(X-20)
1.50X + 15 = 3X - 60
15 = 1.50X - 60
75 = 1.50X
50 = X
