When I was managing a small store my job was to do both. Saving money by ordering product that was less expensive with one company than another and ordering product that would move rapidly thus making more money for the company. They really go hand in hand if you think about it. Both are profit based. If you make the money by getting good product in and keep the cash flow good by selling the product at a good margin you are saving the company loss of a product that just sits on the shelf collecting dust. I had to work through stuff that was dusty when I toOK over my store, which was a tobacco exclusive store, and we had some seriously stupid things in there that no one was remotely interested in. By reducing the price I was able to sell it at a lower margin but it was out of the inventory. You really have to listen to what your customers want in any business, they are the ones buying and if they are looking for something specific they will be ok paying a little more for the exact product they want rather than saving on something that they will think is kinda crappy and will not meet all their needs.
