Supervising you.

Imagine what you think they want to hear, and tell them. Think about what path a successful candidate would pursue in the eyes of the interviewer, then describe that as where you'd like to be in five years.

This is a crappy question, and it deserves a crappy answer. You will get crap like this sometimes in an interview. I think you should treat it as crap. Don't take it as a test. Take it as a game, and you just answer exactly whatever way you think the interviewer would love for you to answer.

---------------------

Replying "Doing your job" or "Supervising You" is a terrible answer. It will be viewed as arrogant, presumptous, immature, or possibly threatening. In all cases, it's not good and will lower your chance of getting the job.

----------------------------------

PS -- don't be yourself in an interview. Be a vanilla, cautious but friendly and engaging version of yourself. Most of all, keep it vanilla. An interview is not an opportunity to get a job, it's more like an opportunity to lose a job if you say the wrong thing. Play it SAFE. Don't express yuorself. You can do that outsie of work.

Be honest but make it good. Just be yourself at the interview and before any interview try to have the answers to these type of questions in mind before you go. This way your promptness in answering may be a bonus. Just be as honest as possible.

I always say - in 5 years I'll finally be able to tell my parole officer to f*ck off!! Man you should see their eyes light up on that one!!!
But seriously folks, they are trying to determine if you have any ambition and if you have really have a career path in mind. Simply saying "I'll have your job" shows no real insight - it's on par with saying "I dunno". If you are applying for an entry level position, research what the career path is and be very specific what route you would like to take and how you foresee getting there (i.e. promotions, part-time studying, univeristy-level courses in that field, etc.).

Trust me I interview all the time being in management and the response (supervising you) isnt what they want to hear.

Sometimes this works:

"In five years, I expect to have your job."

You can elaborate on it a bit, tell him that you're going to be the best employee he ever hired, stuff like that.
