let x be the no of adult tickets and y be the no of student tickets
920 tickets are sold then
x + y = 920
total revenue
4*x + 2*y = 2446
now solve the eqns

Let the number of adult tickets sold be "x" and the number of student tickets sold be "y".

So money amounting to x adult tickets = 4(price of each ticket) * x(no. of tickets sold)

Similarly money amounting to y student tickets = 2(price of each ticket) * y(no. of tickets sold)

Now according to the question:
4x + 2y = 2446 (this is equation 1)

Also total no. of tickets sold = x + y

According to question:
x + y = 920 (this is equation 2)

Now solving equation 1 and 2:

x = 920 - y (from equation 2)

Substituting this value in equation 1

4(920 - y) + 2y = 2446

3680 - 4y + 2y = 2446
2y = 3680 - 2446
2y = 1234
y = 617 (Answer)

systems of equations
Let x = adult tickets
y = children tickets
equation...
4x+2y = 2446
x + y = 920 ---> 920 is the tickets sold
4 dollars per ticket per however many adults there are
and 2 dollars per ticket per however many children are
2446 is the total amount earned

you can use substitution, easier, by subtracting x or y from the left side on the second equation, I chose to use y
now the equation is...
4x+2y = 2446
y= 920-x
substitute y for the first equation...
4x+2(920-x) = 2446
now your new equation looks like this
4x+1840-2x = 2446
combine like terms and subtract 1840 from both sides
2x = 600
solve for x
x = 300
now plug in 300 for any original equation (I chose x+y = 920 -> easier) now the equation looks like this...
300+y = 920
solve for y, and your answer would be
y = 620
If there is nothing wrong then there would be 300 adult tickets sold and 620 student ticket sold
x = 300, y = 620

someone beat me to it but i solved it

equation 1: 920 = x + y
equation 2: 2446 = 4x + 2y

step 1: 2(920) = (x + y)2 which equals 1840 = 2x + 2y
step 2: 2446 = 4x + 2y subtract equation by
1840 = 2x + 2y
step 3: you now have 606 = 2x...divide both sides by 2
step 4: x = 303. now plug it in the first equation and you'll get y = 617

student tickets sold = 617

Let x = number of student tickets
then 920-x = number of adult tickets
4(920-x) + 2x = 2446
3680 - 4x + 2x = 2446
-2x = 2446 - 3680 = -1234
x = 617

let the total no of adult tickets b x and that of student be y

4*x+2*y = 2446

x+y = 920

now solve both the equations simultaneously,

the answer would be

x = 303 n y = 617

student ticket sold is 617

4A + 2S = 2446
4(920-S) +2S = 2446
3680 -4S + 2S = 2446
3680 - 2S = 2446
-2S = -1234
S = 617
