Operation Iraqi Freedom
We had just moved to Georgia and been there for about a month and a half when the Army told us that my husband would be leaving for a 6 month rotation to Kuwait. He left 2 days before our oldests sons 6th birthday and after being gone for a month he knew he was going to war but it had not been announced so when he talked to me he had to act like he didn't know anything. Then President Bush announced that we were going into Iraq and that the 3rd Infantry Division was going to lead the way and I broke down and cried like I have never cried in my life and that was pretty much each and every day for 290 consecutive days. I only got to talk to my husband twice during major combat time and each phone call was about 6-10 minutes long. My oldest son is a very advanced little boy and he would stare at photos of his dad and then ask me if his daddy had died. I spent months glued to MSNBC because David Bloom was reporting with my husbands unit and I was begging the TV to just show him to me so I knew he was ok. It's crazy, when he joined the Army it was a way of providing for our family and good benefits and not once did I ever think that my husband would go to war. So many men and women came home from war with emotional and mental and physical problems and so many families have had to adjust to this new person that came home because they are not the same people they were when they left. I have never felt anything close to the kind of fear and loneliness and worry that I felt that year.

My younger sister being born. She was born disabled and almost everyone in my family couldn't look at her for a while. I was the one who was taking care of her most of the time (I was 15 when she was born). She taught me patience and how to show unconditional love. I also found what I wanted to major in. :)
