ipod help!!! ASAP!!!!!!!!?

my ipod won't turn off or refresh. just to make sure how do u turn it off and refresh it to make sure i was doing it right but i'm sure i was. and more important how do i fix this?

hold down menu & middle button (@ same time) till u see the apple logo
