I turned on my Dell laptop today and it automatically shut off about 3 seconds after pressing the power button...kept doing it every time I tried. Then after some time it did come up, windows xp came up fine, and then at a random time the screen got discolored and froze. Went through this whole cycle about 3 times where sometimes it will automatically shut off after three seconds, and sometimes it will come on but end up freezing...is this a virus or a problem with the hard drive? Do I need to refrag the hard drive? Thanks.

I have an e1505 try booting into safe mode by pressing f8. Sounds like a bad driver.

If the internal fan is working properly, and the system doesn't seem to be overheating you might try removing the laptop battery and seeing if the problem disappears. It may be a case of your battery has failed, or isn't making a good connection with the battery contacts.
