and one of them tells you a really mean secret about the other one, and you had promised to him you wouldn't tell your other best friend before he told you the secret. Would you tell your other best friend, or keep the promise?

I would keep the secret because it would only hurt the third friend if I told them and cause hurt to all involved. Also, self preservation, kill the messenger.
I would also ask the first friend, in a polite way, not to speak that way about the other friend.

It would depend on the secret. But in general, I feel the other friend has the right to know. UNLESS if all it would do is hurt the person. If you really feel the other person has the right to know and that it wouldn't do TOO much damage, you could hint at it...
Good question, though.. Tough choice. I wish you good luck in whatever you do about this situation.

I think it depends on what the secret is, though if they were really my best friend, they wouldn't be telling me mean secrets about my other best friend to begin with.
I actually do have 2 best friends. Fortunately for me, they only know each other because of me (one has been my friend for 16ish years and the other one became my best friend when I worked somewhere without the first one).

Depends on the secret. If it endangers the other friend, I'd break the promise.

I'm in a predicament just like that. And though i have a more meaningful relationship with the one being badmouthed i still keep my promise.

IT DEPENDS ON HOW BAD OR MEAN THE SECRET IS ABOUT THE OTHER FRIEND. &EVEN THOUGH A PROMISE IS A PROMISE SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO BREAK EM

keep the secret unless it is going to some how hurt the person. and if so then let them know if they do not tell the person themselves, then you will.

You better tell it to your friend with the permission of your other friend...Being bestfriends requires understanding and proper communication without secrecy from one another.
