I just don't want to wear down the battery or use a lot of power, so I turn it on and off a lot. I want to know if that will make it wear down more quickly.

Things like the hinges, the screen latch, and even the 'On' button can wear out over time. But by then the laptop will be very old anyway and you won't care.

If you mean you shut it down after you use it then no there is no evidence that this will harm your system. Most place there systems in standby or hibernate in order to bring it back up quickly. Many offices do this during the week and only shut down on Fridays for the weekend. I shut mine down when I'm finished due to the fact that my system is in my bedroom and it puts off a great deal of heat. I have never had any problems stemming from this. However, if you push the button to turn it off rather than shutting it down properly you could corrupt your system files and this is definitely not good. But as long as it is properly shut down you should be fine. Hope this helps!
