My car was impounded and the towing company has my tags. I'm not sure if they have the rite to hold them. I was told that they had to return to the MVA. They haven't returned them. What consequences may they face?

Legally, yes because they are entitled to it. Say if you dont pay them how will the company get paid? They dont want it to be their lost so until you pay they keep, and if you dont they sell product to retrieve payment. In some cases they can take you to court to recieve payment, court cost, attorney fee, stc. So the next time read the contract before signing.

If the tags belong to the car that was impounded, then no, they don't have to return them. They are with the car that they belong to, and you have no reason to get them back (you aren't allowed to put them on a different car).

If they belong to a different car and aren't willing to return them to you, then go down to the Dept of Motor Vehicles and apply for a new set of tags. You'll have to pay a fee to DMV. If you want, you can explain the situation to DMV and hope that they will step in and ask for the tags, but I wouldn't count on this happening.
